A celebration of her life will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at First Covenant Church in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Bernice (Broberg) Buer Block was born May 3, 1924 to Albin and Emma Broberg on the farm where she spent her growing-up years speaking Swedish until starting first grade. All four of her grandparents were born in Sweden and immigrated to Minnesota. Bernice was baptized and confirmed at Salem Covenant Church, Pennock, MN. In her youth she taught children at her church, sang and accompanied groups on piano, and played her ukulele and sang solos. She worked in Minneapolis at NW National Bank for a short time after high school before enrolling in a one-year teacher education class. She then taught in a one-room school near Atwater for two years and one year near Willmar. She met her husband, Melvin "T" Buer, when teaching near Atwater. They married in 1947 and raised five children. Church was always an important part of their family life and First Covenant Church in Willmar was where Bernice met some of her best friends. She travelled with Melvin to Israel, Switzerland, Norway and Sweden. Two years after Melvin died from cancer, Bernice moved to Willmar and became even more involved in the church Senior Group, Dorcas Circle, Senior Women's Bible Study, preparing and serving Wednesday night meals and other church meals, and visiting the elderly (which were often her age or younger). She also served Meals on Wheels and on Rice Hospital Auxiliary. In 1996 she married another wonderful man, Bill Block, with whom she shared life until he passed from cancer in 2002. Bernice was an excellent baker and cook and created beautiful pieces of hardanger, counted cross-stitch, candle wicking, embroidery, afghans, quilts, Raggedy Ann and Andy and other dolls. She continued her busy schedule for many more years, but was slowed by the challenges of aging in recent years. In the midst of her struggles, she was always gracious, loving, and generous to everyone. On Sunday morning, December 13, 2015, Bernice was welcomed into her eternal home. She is survived by her children: Judy Peterson, Mike (and Barb) Buer, Debra (and Jim) Berger, Denise (and Paul) Hedberg, Cindy (and Peter) Hedstrom; one brother Lowell Broberg, sister-in-law, Doris Broberg, brother-in-law, Peter Fransen, sister-in-law, Doris Buer Knutson, sister-in-law, Darleen Buer Hovey, sister-in-law, Alice Block Nelson, fifteen grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Her husbands, Melvin "T" Buer, Bill Block; parents, Albin and Emma Broberg; brother, LeRoy Broberg; sister-in-law, Adele Broberg; sister, Margaret Fransen; and son-in-law, Carleton Peterson preceded her in death. Memorial money will go to the ministry of Lake Beauty Bible Camp.
